PREAMBLE

the ultimate aim of any library and information center is to satisfy the information needs of it users. Thus, all the services provided in any library and information centers are user-oriented. To fulfill the needs of the users, library and information centers acquire all kinds of resources including book and non-book materials. These resources have to be properly organized so that they can be accessible to users who have a variety of and varying interests,  and need relevant information to fulfill these interests. To make relevant information available to users, libraries and information centers have devised a number of retrieval tools. The above background is what this course, Basic Classification (knowledge organizations and information retrieval)  is meant to be taught to students of Library and Information Science, regards to document description, cataloguing, classification, indexing, and abstracting activities in information centers.
